DS. 2pg. 10 ½” x 16”. March 27, 1946.Washington. A partly-printed extraditiondocument signed “Harry S Truman” as President and co-signed “Dean Acheson” as theActing Secretary of State. The document,addressed to the Federal officers Clifford Geiger and Michael Gagliano, ordersthe extradition of “Mike Mirandi chargedwith the crime of murder in the first degree fugitive from the justice of theUnited States supposed to have taken refuge in San Giuseppe, Italy. And Whereas, Application has been made to theauthorities of Italy for the extradition of said fugitive, in compliance withexisting treaty stipulations between the United States of America and Italy…Youare hereby authorized and empowered, in virtue of the stipulations aforesaid,and in execution thereof, to receive the said Mike Mirandi as aforesaid, and totake and hold him in your custody, and conduct him from such place of deliveryin Italy by the most direct and convenient means of transportation, to and intothe United States, there to surrender the said Mike Mirandi to the properauthorities of the State of New York…”.On September 19, 1934, the New York mobster Ferdinand “The Shadow”Boccia was murdered by the young Vito Genovese, who later became a prominentmob boss; Boccia’s body was found three years later. Genovese fled to Italy and was extradited in1946 and jailed; the government later released him for lack of evidence. Five men were indicted for the Boccia murder,including Mirandi. During World War II,however, the United States could not extradite fugitives from Mussolini’sItaly. Once the war was over, however,the long arm of the law went back into effect.There is a large Presidential seal attached, the signatures are dark,and it is in fine condition. It isaccompanied by the original mailing envelope.
