19th c. Etching by listed Dutch artist Hendrick Dirk Kruseman Van Elten (1829-1904)
Though born and raised in Holland, he spent his final years in France.
He was one of the first artists in America to bring the art of landscape etching to the forefront.
This etching was commissioned by the American Art Review in 1880. The American Art Review served as a cornerstone for many great American etchings. Though due to the high cost of the quality works, they lasted just over 2 years. These etchings are now sought after by collectors, and designers alike.
Titled \"On the Shepang River, Connecticut\" c.1880
Original plate signed etching. Plate size 5\" x 9\". Paper with full margins measures 12\" x 8 3/4\".
At nearly 140 years old, this etching still looks fantastic. We consider the condition to be excellent.
Printed on fine hand made laid paper with full margins. A deep impression with superb texture.
The American Art Review etchings were typically limited to under 200 impressions. We are unsure of the actual size of this edition, though this one appears to be quite rare.
