Offered here is a highly collectible shell armchair on the rocker base designed by Charles and Ray Eames and manufactured by Herman Miller. An art museum piece from the start. This particular chair has the more rare half checkerboard label which dates it to around 1953-54 toward the end of the zenith rope edge period before the move to Zeeland, Mi. One of the most rare and desirable of the Eames shell chairs, it will only go up in value. RAR stands for rocker height, armchair, rocker base.
Features Zenith fiberglass shell with very pronounced fibers running throughout in a pale yellow color. It also has the first generation rope edge imbedded in the fiberglass. It sits on the desirable rocker base which appears to have birch wood runners. Large size shock mounts. Original early red, white and black half checkerboard tag still attached. From the estate of the original owner.
Condition is good with normal age appropriate wear and structurally sound. This is a 60 year old chair. Some shock mount bleed through on front two. There is a slight stress crack at left front seat where shock mount attaches but not bad. Visible but does not affect structure. Weld repairs have been made at some point in history to the front two points where base attaches to shock mounts and are solid now. Please see pictures and ask any questions.
