Garvey formed Black Star Line to transport African-Americans back to Africa to start a new and better life there, unfettered by bigotry and racism. The name itself was antithetical to the era\'s most famous white-owned ship line, White Star Line (controlled by JP Morgan & owner of the Titanic*). In a case that was clearly racially motivated, Garvey was arrested on Federal fraud charges for selling the subject stock, which makes it all the more historically significant.

The stock features a superb vignette (engraved illustration) of a black man pointing to Africa emblazoned with \"AFRICA,THE LAND of OPPORTUNITY\" on a 3-D globe nestled on clouds before a steamship on open seas, as well as an ornate green border and rays shining up toward the dramatic vignette.
