Very rare, historic late Edwardian sterling silver trophy tankard from the 1910 London To Brighton Walking Race. The tankard is superbly engraved as follows \"LONDON TO BRIGHTON WALK. 25TH. SEPTEMBER 1910. S.J. WATSON. 11 HOURS - 3 MINUTES\".
Weight: 257.3 gm. Height: 115 mm. Diameter of rim: 85 mm. Diameter of base: 70 mm. Hall Mark: London 1910 (probably, rubbed). Maker\'s Mark: William Hutton & Sons Ltd (rubbed but legible).
Race Walking: In the 1860s when athletics began to be organised on a formal basis the first Amateur Walking Championship was held. The 1904 Olympics decathlon included a 800m walk and in the 1908 Olympics walking was included for the first time as a separate event. London to Brighton walks started around the turn of the Century and are still held today. The trophy for sale will be one of the earliest sterling silver trophies awarded.
