VERY RARE - SCARCE FIRST EDITION - FIRST ISSUE
RARE LIMITED EDITION of a CELEBRATED WORK
FINE ORIGINAL FULL MARBLED CALF LEATHER BINDINGS THE HISTORY OF GREECE
by
WILLIAM MITFORD LONDON: Printed by T. Wright, MDCCLXXXIV - MDCCCXVIII [published date: 1784 - 1818]. Rare First edition. 4to. 11.25\" x 9\" inches (LxB). Pp. [10], 450; [16], 695; [10], 539; [2], xii, 634; [12], 565, [2, errata, 1, ads] pages. One Map at the start of volume 1. The first volume of \'History of Greece\' appeared in 1784 and vol. ii. in 1790, but the book was not completed till 1810 (vol. iv). Bound in Fine original contemporary full fine marbled calf leather binding, gilt decorated spine with a maroon gilt lettered morocco label, boards with floral gilt borders surrounded by triple gilt inner dentelles, board edges with gilt chain link, inner dentelles, decorative marbled endpapers. *Volume V was published in 1818 and is fully devoted to Alexander the Great, from the Time he suceeded to the Macedonian Throne till his death ( July 356 – June 323 BC). Chillingham Castle bookplates on the front pastedowns of all 5 volumes. In the year (1784) following that of the publication of Ferguson’s Roman History appeared the first volume of William Mitford’s History of Greece, a venture upon what was then, in English historical literature, almost untrodden ground. Gibbon had suggested the enterprise to Mitford, who was his brother-officer in the south-Hampshire militia and had published a treatise on the military force of England, and the militia in particular. Mitford’s History, which was not completed till 1810, long held the field, and only succumbed to works of enduring value. It is only necessary to glance at Macaulay’s early article on the work, in order to recognise that, in the midst of his partisan cavils in spite, too, of shortcomings of historical criticism particularly obvious in the account of the heroic age - Mitford displays an apprehension of the grandeur of the theme on which he is engaged. He is prejudiced, but not unconscientious; and, from his frequently perverse conclusions, many an English student has been able to disentangle his first conception of Greek free citizenship. Mitford\'s history remained popular for many years and had the merit of supplying a laborious English work on a comparatively neglected subject. It was superior at most points to the Greek history by John Gillies, published in 1786. It was praised by Brougham in the \'Edinburgh Review,\' and by Alison (Hist. of Europe, 1815-52, chap, v.). Alison considers that the author, writing at the time of the French revolution, intended chiefly to counteract visionary ideas as to the blessings of Athenian democracy. Dr. Arnold thought that Mitford\'s anti- Jacobin partialities at any rate saved his history from dullness. A classic work, complete as issued. There are numerous close-up pictures of the contents given below; please click on them for a detailed description (See Scans below). Please take some time to view the 50+ pictures in detail, in order to gain a full idea of the contents and condition.

Volume 2: 1790. Pp. [16], 695 pages
Volume 3: 1797. Pp. [10], 539 pages.
Volume 4: 1808. Pp. [2], xii, 634 pages.
Volume 5: 1818. Pp. [12], 565, [2, errata, 1, ads] pages. The history of Greece encompasses the history of the territory of the modern state of Greece, as well as that of the Greek people and the areas they ruled historically. The scope of Greek habitation and rule has varied much through the ages, and, as a result, the history of Greece is similarly elastic in what it includes. Each era has its own related sphere of interest. The first (proto-) Greek-speaking tribes, are generally thought to have arrived in the Greek mainland between the late 3rd and the first half of the 2nd millennium BC – probably between 1900 and 1600 BC.[1] When the Mycenaeans invaded, the area was inhabited by various non-Greek-speaking, indigenous pre-Greek people, who practiced agriculture as they had done since the 7th millennium BC. At its geographical peak, Greek civilization spread from Greece to Egypt and to the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan. Since then, Greek minorities have remained in former Greek territories (e.g., Turkey, Albania, Italy, and Libya, Levant, Armenia, Georgia, etc.), and Greek emigrants have assimilated into differing societies across the globe (e.g., North America, Australia, Northern Europe, South Africa, etc.). Today most Greeks live in the modern state of Greece (independent since 1821) and Cyprus.
