Comments: Lot #4. You are buying a lot of four (4) handwritten receipts acknowledging the receipt of funds from Louis Schaefer from 1844 to 1849. Each of the four is from a different person. They are readable if you try real hard. All are in surprisingly nice shape for being over 160 years old.

Louis Schaefer was born in France in 1815 and immigrated to America with his family in 1830. They settled near Canton, Ohio. Louis clerked in a Canton dry goods store before taking up law in 1840. He became quite a prominent citizen in the growing city of Canton. He was an attorney, a city councilman, and the builder/owner/operator of the second opera house to be built in the state of Ohio. He was a driving force behind the formation of the Canton City Fire Department, the City Waterworks, and the building of the County Courthouse. He served on the local school board and was instrumental in bringing the Diebold Safe Company to Canton. Schaefer died in 1889. These receipts are an authentic piece of Canton/Stark County history.

The Small PrintWe have been booksellers for 30 years. We hope you will trust us to accurately and fairly describe our books. If anything, we tend to grade lower than we should. We use the traditional book grading system of (from best to worst): As New, Fine, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor. As new means just what it says; fine is a copy with a few very small faults; a very good copy has minor faults but is usually acceptable to a collector; good is a reasonable copy but with definite problems; fair is just barely tolerable; poor means it\'s all there and readable but that\'s about it. A plus or minus means at the high or low end of that grade..Ohio residents must add 6.0% sales tax (before postage). We only ship to the United States. No territories, no APO, no other countries. We just don\'t have the time to deal with foreign shipment hassles.Books are usually shipped within 2 working days of receiving payment. Our free shipping is normally through USPS Media Mail. No insurance; we pack so there should be no damage in transit and we will make good if the book is damaged in shipment. If you desire priority mail, please email us.We will not sell items after an sale ends without offers. Buy via the sale or not at all. If we re-list the item it will be at a higher price to cover our time and effort..Questions are welcome.
