Presented today is this lovely Hopi Cradle Kachina,depicting Qoqole, the Story Telling Kachina. This Kachina, a favorite withchildren appears during the Powamu, and is half-serious and half-comical, andit is oftentimes difficult to tell which.
The artist who created this doll told me that CradleKachinas are given in 3 separate parts of an infant\'s life. The first style isvery simplified, small and flat. It is given to the baby soon after its birth.The second style, given after a few months, is more complex, with the head andarms carved in bas relief. The third style, given when the baby is almost atoddler, is almost fully formed, but still having a flat back. This processmimics the baby\'s own growth and evolution. i have seen these different types,but this was the first time the reason behind was explained to me.
This beautiful example of the 3rd phase Cradle Kachina iscarved with startling delicacy and detail, and is the work of the highlytalented and respected Martin Dallas, of Moencopi. Martin has taken the art ofthe Cradle Kachina doll to incredible heights. This lovely doll stand 5inches tall, and would look great in any Kachina doll collection, andboth from the standpoint of subject matter and remarkable decoration, it would definitelycall attention to itself. i am very proud to represent the work of thistalented artist, and to offer his artwork to all of you, my friends.
