Huge Antique 19thC Carved Meerschaum/Amber Pipe~Victorian Woman Walking Bulldog:
$280.00

An absolutely fantastic &large size, estate found late nineteenthcentury highly carved meerschaum pipe with a sterling band & an amber stem,in the original blue satin & velvet lined case – offered with and a low opening offer!

The bowl is adorned with a full figural Victorian woman holding herhem in her right hand, attached to her extended left hand is a carved leash witha fully carved American (?) bulldog.

The pipe measures a veryimpressive 11” wide (on adiagonal from the tip pf the leaf/fern under the woman’s boot across the tip ofthe stem) x 4-3/4” high (to the topof the hat brim) x approximately 2-1/4”deep. The pipe measures 234.6 grams. The (detached) amber stem measures approximately 5” long and weighs 18.9 grams. There is a 1/2” high silver band marked STERLING which unscrews &connects the shank to the amber stem. (*Theamber stem is broken/detached from the sterling band). The case is of course slightlylarger and is marked on the inside of the blue satin lid in gold lettering: Warranted Meerschaum.

Really fabulous subject matterand attention to detail: The woman’shat, dress & high button bootines are very well delineated, one can makeout folds in the material & hemline as well as individual flowers in herstraw hat. By the costume (dress has a bustle) and neckline we are dating thepipe circa 1885.

The dog is charming. He has agreat face & is strutting along on the leash – the leash is realisticallycarved to resemble a real leather leash. The chamber is etched and isstylistically carved to resemble a tree trunk. The color of the bowl is a rich, brown with a satiny/shiny patina on the girl & the dog, shading to a darkermahogany brown on the bottom & the shank.

Condition: There are no chips, nicks, cracks, breaks,touch-ups or repairs on the bowl. The amber stem is broken/detached at the baseof the sterling band. This is a usedestate pipe that has been smoked. Neither the chamber, bowl, stem, bit, nor thecase has been cleaned or polished. There is some surface wear includingsurface abrasions commensurate with the age & gentle use of the pipe. Theinterior of the case has some age soiling & discoloration, the exterior ofthe case has some scuffs; the hinge & clasp work fine. Please see photos for details & specifics of the condition.
