Outstanding Solid Silver Claret Jug, Barnard & Sons,1876.

Description

A fabulous antique solid sterling silver claret jug / wine ewer.

The oversized jug (41cm tall, 2 litre capacity) with flared spout and spreading circular base.

In veryVictorian style, the jug is heavily decorated throughout.

The main features on the body are four lions grasping a rope in their mouths

Other decorative elementsinclude strapwork, swags, garland and gadrooning.

The handle featuring wonderfully ornate stylised acanthus leaf accents.

Hallmarked to the side of the neck and also underneath the lid.

Hallmarks are for Barnard & Co., London 1876.

The Barnard family consisted of John, Edward, Walter & John Barnard.

An absolutely top quality piece, of extra large size and weight.

Condition

Good condition with just expected wear.

Small area of solder/repair to foot (see pic. 10).

A few small dents to front of body.

General surface wear throughout.

Hallmarks are somewhat rubbed.
