Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel\'s sketch art started to appear during the 1930s in Switzerland and Germany, mostly pastoral drawings of children. Ars Sacra, a Swiss art publisher helped to popularize the art on postcards. The \"Art Cards\" of Hummel became popular throughoutGermany. Franz Goebel, a porcelain maker in charge of W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik became interested in the cards and acquired the rights to turn the drawings of Hummel\'s into figurines. The first figurines were produced in 1935.Goebel was one of several porcelain firms that competed in the United States market. Franz Goebel specialized in novelty marketing and was able to create a popularity for the figurines in the United States during the 1930s, starting with German Immigrants on the United States East Coast.

After WWII, the popularity of Hummel figurines grew when Americansoldiers stationed in West Germany sentthe figurines home as gifts.Hummel figurines became a popular collector\'s item. Fugurines grew in popularity when the U.S. Army decided to place the fugurines in their PX stores. In the 1970\'s, the market for Hummel figurines grew.

The production of Hummel figurines concerning Goebel ended in 2008 and was picked up by an organization called “Hummel Manufaktur GmbH”
