ID\'d Charcoal Portrait of Samuel G. Allen, 2nd US Artillery
This is a Nice old Attic Fresh Charcoal Portrait Painting featuring a Union Civil War Soldier in Full Uniform with his US Buckle in Plain View. This old Boy has been in the same frame for many years and one of the Previous Owners (no doubt a relative) added some information about the old Boy. He is identified as Samuel G. Allen of the 2nd Regular Union Artillery, Battery B. The Online Soldiers and Sailors system also reports a Samuel G. Allen in the 2nd Regular Union Artillery, Battery B. so we can only assume the ID is correct. This old attic Fresh Portrait has soiling around as well as a few old tears that have been secured with additional backing. The frame is solid with wear to the gesso and there is glass on both sides. Ready for Display or you could easily re-size this beauty, cut off some wear and mount it in an Oval shaped Frame.

The portrait itself still display nicely though it would be a welcome addition to an oval shaped frame that would cut off some of the soiling and wear around the edges of the portrait, especially the top right corner. There are also a couple of small tears so the paper like canvas has been re-backed with a canvas like material many years ago to add stability to the paper. Other than soiling this old piece is holding firm and would be a welcome addition to any Collection with the information still on the Tall
