Description: This is a superb antique imperial Russiansterling silver & enamel triptych travel icon. From pre-Soviet ImperialRussia, this folding miniature altar pendant, crafted in .84 silver, unfolds toreveal a colorful enamel triptych incorporating saints and the Twelve Apostles.To the reverse the icon is stamped with the makers mark “П.О\"(Pavel Ovchinnikov), Assayers mark, Silver standard mark 84, and Moscowhallmark depicted Saint George slaying the dragon.

Pavel Ovchinnikov made an important contribution to thedevelopment of enamel art in Russia.
The mastersof his firm enjoyed an excellent command of such diverse techniques aschamplevé enamel, enamel on filigree, enamel varnish in the oriental style andcloisonné enamel (which Ovchinnikov was the first to revive in Europe). Thecompany also widely employed window or stained-glass enamel, when transparent,multi-colored enamel was applied to the ajour carcass of the object, shininglike medieval stained-glass windows.

Russian masters enjoyed an unrivalled command of every techniqueemployed in gold and silverware. This unique fusion of the national creativespirit and contemporary culture helped to create some of the greatestmasterpieces of Russian and world jewelry.
