The Maurya Empire was one of thelargest empiresof the world in its time. At its greatest extent, the empire stretched to the north along the natural boundaries of theHimalayas, to the east intoAssam, to the west intoBalochistan(southwestPakistanand southeastIran) and theHindu Kushmountains of what is nowAfghanistan. The Empire was expanded into India\'s central and southern regions by the emperors Chandragupta andBindusara, but it excluded a small portion of unexplored tribal and forested regions nearKalinga(modernOdisha), until it was conquered byAshoka. It declined for about 50years after Ashoka\'s rule ended, and it dissolved in 185BCE with the foundation of theShunga dynastyin Magadha.
