Being offered is a very rare and interesting Filipino Bolo sword. This piece measures 18\" in total length when measured in its scabbard. The handle is interesting. It is carved in a monster format with big smile showing all teeth with tribal designs carved on each cheek. The handle has an old varnish applied to it. The handle has 10 inlaid stones of alternating red and green color. I have never seen this feature in a Filipino handle before. The ferrule is copper. The thick Bolo style blade has some interesting features. There is a sun face on one side. The sun face is often associated with katipunan and first republic pieces so I wonder if there is any association there. Each side of the blade next to,the spine has a long row of X carved. Perhaps a naga representation. The clipped point blade has inlaid copper dots on each side and there are 4 notches carved into the spine beside the clipped point. This is a heavy chopping powerful blade with lots of talismanic imagery in both the handle and the blade. The scabbard is open faced and the wood has developed a nice patina. There is an old collection number to the reverse. A rare sword. I have never seen another like it. Needs researching. Please e-mail with any questions.
