AnImportant Antique late 18th/early 19th Century Persian Khorasan Carpet Fragment

Rare Museum Grade Piece w/ Excellet Drawn Herati Design, Persia- FREE SHIPPING!

On offer is an exceptional and very rare antique Persian Khorasan carpet fragment dating circa late 18th Century - Early 19th Century. Though a post Safavid Dynasty era carpet production, the classic Herati design echoes the influence of that period. The palmets and the vines are magnificently drawn. The natural colours are nothing short of spectacular and really bring out the design. That maroon red ground field is very likely derived from lac dye (a very expensive and rare type of insect dye). This is aquintessentialcolour that one sees in most Khorasan carpets of this period. The detail, the sophisticated weaving technique, the quality of the wool and the precision with which the design is drawn really blows away younger antique Persian rugs (as beautiful as they may be).

The most interesting feature of on this rug is the two tulips on either sides of the central gol. When Victoria Albert Museum (in london) and Christie\'s sales saw the piece, they also picked this point, stating that this motif is often seen in Mughal and seldom inPersiancarpets. But the weaving structure certainly attributes it to the Khorasan period. The novice collector should not dismiss the fact that it is a fragment. Considering the rarity of such carpets, even the fragments are as valued and collectible as complete examples (the latter often going for tens of thousands of dollars). This is an important piece, offered at a very fair price and worthy of any important collection.

Experts will agree that considering the age and rarity of such pieces, the condition of this example is beyond acceptable. It is a fragment of a field section. The borders are restored/reattached and is nicely finished with an edging. The pile is good with some lowered areas and some oxidation of the black dyed wool (this is a typical and important indication of good age, the black dyes often deteriorated over time the wool). There are some old repairs as seen on the photo but no reweaves. For its age and rarity it is in good shape. It would look beautiful mounted or framed boasting an important period of weaving history.

The Khorasan carpets of late 18th Century and Early 19th Century are very collectible and an important period in the study of not only Persian carpet tradition but also the weaving history of the last 400-500 years. It is a period that followed and was influenced by the magnificent Persian Safavid Dynasty. The Safavid empire was a very rich and prosperous one that lasted for a few hundred years. Their carpets were perhaps some of the most important and influential weaving. Rulers of the empirecommissionedsome magnificent carpets, which lead to a very rich and sophisticated carpet production period in Persia. Their designs and colours were so majestic and powerful that their influence spread to neighbouring regions including Mughal India, Caucasus and Central Asia. What is often referred to as Persianate or Herati design is primarily routed to the Safavid weaving tradition. Almost all surviving Safavid carpets (be it fragments or whole) are housed in some of the most important museums around the world.

When the Safavid empire broke down during the first half of 18th Century, their design influence continued to echo in what most refer to as post Safavid Persian carpets. This period was second half of 18th Century and went on to early 19th Century. These carpets somewhat echoed the magnificence designs, colours and the sophisticated weaving structures of the Safavid but they were not made under the Safavid Period. The so called \"Khorasan Carpets\" are from such period. Later Persian carpets started to evolve in design and colour and lost the essence of these older periods.

Khorasan is a region North East of Persia and their designs were often referred to as Herati. It is a generic term used for such palmet motifs attached with curling leafs. The older the the carpet the more precise and sharp the interpretation of the Herati design. The Herati design continued to be copied and reinterpreted by younger carpets both in Persia and Mughal India but they lost the aura of the older examples. Most Khorasan carpets were commissioned for monarchy and or noblemen\'s homes and perhaps that is why they were so sophisticated and majestic in their designs, colours and weaving structure. A piece like this is an
