We offer this impressive late 16th century silver giltpectoral crucifix, dating to circa 1580 AD. The crucifix has atriangular body, as found on gold Spanish pendants of this date.It is practically in perfect condition for a ground foundexample, having most of the original mercurial gold gildingintact and bright. The bottom of the cross has a slight dent fromits time in the ground. Both of the pendants hanging from thearms of the cross are original to it (likely representing theHoly Spirit), the suspension loop at the bottom of the crosslikely had another. Below the Corpus is a little applied image ofthe Virgin. Such an imposing silver gilt crucifix was clearlymeant to be seen, suspended on a long chain or ribbon around theneck, to hang on the chest. It original owner must have been apowerful Catholic nobleman or Bishop. Today this wonderfulcrucifix can still be worn with care.
