A wonderful ancient Indus Valley,Bronze Age pottery statue, dating to the fourth Millennium B.C.

An attractive statue, probably representing a fertility Goddess. The figure is shown infine detail with deep-set eyes, zoomorphic, bird-likeappearance and veiled headdress

Thispiece dates to the Mehrgarh periods IV - VI, approximately 3500-2800 B.C. It is now believed that the pottery of Mehrgarh supercedes that of Mesopotamia in being the earliest known polychrome ceramics produced by Humans. Exciting new evidence from Mehrgarh during this period has come to light recently, showing us that these people had knowledge of dentistry!

The little known Indus Valley Culture flourished throughout large areas of modern India and Pakistan in the 3rd Millennium B.C., along the Indus, a river arising from the snowy Himalayan mountains. When the snow melted in the spring, the river used to flood, providing fertile soil and the perfect conditions for civilization to develop. Public knowledge of this culture is almost non-existent in the west, largely because the major towns of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro were only discovered at the turn of the last century. However, theseBronze Age people had knowledge of town planning, sewers and sophisticated architecture long before the Greeks and Romans. Indus valley artifacts are gaining popularity on the art market as collectors start to appreciate this fascinating culture and the imaginative art that it produced.
