AN original Civil War letter from Captain JC Layton, Center Township Home Guards at Big Grove, Pottawattomie County, Iowa, August 30, 1864, to General NB Baker, providing details of his unit armament- the 55 men are armed w 30 \"common muskets\", some rusty & needing cleaning, & the unit has a box of 1000 ball cartridges but no accoutrements or gun appendages, This letter was written during the Iowa Skunk River or Tally War Copperhead Uprising Big Grove, (now Oakland, Iowa), east of Council Bluffs, was originally a Mormon settlement, Joshua C Layton was an early pioneer following the Mormon Exodus. 2pp 8 x 11\" ink.
