***Damascene inlay work usually combines brass, copper and silver. This technique, which was highly influenced by Islamic art, was perfected by the Jews of Damascus. It is characterized by rich and very dense decorations and stylized foliage. In the 19th century metal workers in Egypt and Syria revived the art of metallic inlays, a technique that had been popular in the Mamluk period (13th – 16th Century). This revival occurred in response to European demand for Mamluk collectibles, which became scarce with the formation of art museums in Egypt and Syria.
