!

For your consideration is this magnificent example of early English brown and white transfer printed ironstone pottery.  Made by John Turner of Lane End (now Longton), Stoke On Trent, England.  Underneath it is impressed \"TURNER\" which means it is late 18th Century, produced between 1784 to 1806.    THE OLDEST PIECE OF IRONSTONE I HAVE EVER PROCURED!

John Turner began operations in 1762, and produced some of the best wares of his day.  Turner wares equaled Wedgwood\'s quality and was often mistaken for them.   In 1784, Turner was appointed potter to the Prince of Wales.  After John Turner\'s death in 1787, the company was run by his sons William & John.  In 1806, the company closed due to bankruptcy.

After securing losses to their main market in France (due to the French Revolution), Turner tried establishing new markets in America.  This platter\'s Native American wild flower design, was likely intended to appeal to the North American market.  The oval shape is remarkably rare, as most examples were rectangular.

In very good condition, free from chips or cracks.  The glaze is shiny and the colors are vivid.  It does have some areas of roughness around the edges, light crazing, utensil marks, and manufacturing imperfections & kiln marks ... typical of early earthenware.

It is an impressive 17\" long x 12 1/2\" wide and weighs in at just under 4 lbs.

A wonderful piece!
