Who was John Wanamaker? Us golfers have heard of the famous Wanamaker Trophy, the largest trophy in Professional Golf and the one given to the winner of the PGA Tournament. Winners of this trophy include Rory McIlroy twice, Tiger Woods thrice, Jason Day, Phil Mickleson, Jack Nicklaus the list goes on. It was John Wanamakers son Rodman who started the PGA Golf Tournament by donating $2500 for the first place winner and its famous trophy. John, Rodman\'s father started his successful Department Store Business in 1861 and was known as a pioneer in Marketing offering \"One Price\" and \"Goods Returnable\". Search \"John Wanamaker\" for the Wikipedia information on him, there are a lot of details there.
Up for sale in this collection are two John Wanamaker artifacts. First we have the John Wanamaker watch. It is a mens swiss made fully automatic (self winding) watch probably from late 1950\'s or early 1960\'s. The movement is marked John Wanamaker as is the dial. The watch is not running and I believe it just needs a new mainspring, nothing serious. (I could have it repaired for a fee) The second artifact is a handwritten letter by Mr. John Wanamaker to Florence Hudson Beishlag (whom I found out passed away in 1945 in her home town Philadelphia) Interesting that the letter is postmarked Sept 26, 1908 and postmarked New York city and the letter itself is dated September 26, 1906? How could that be? Did he write the letter and hold onto it for exactly two years or did the post office have the incorrect date on their stamp? I like mysteries like that. Isn\'t it interesting that John was the United States 35th Postmaster General, he would not have liked the wrong dated stamp on his letter, if it was in error. His letter goes on to thank Mrs Beishlag for her support and refers to a new building being erected in Philadelphia. I could not determine what building that was as the famous Wanamaker Building was already erected at that time in Philadelphia. The letter is signed by John and is quite a valuable keepsake. A lot of history in these two items and I think quite collectable to the right parties. I thank you for your interest in these items and I am selling them at a modest cost.
