JAPANESE STERLING DRAGON BOX; ARTHUR & BOND, YOKOHAMA; WEIGHS 37 OZ.; WAS $7500 USD

We are pleased to offer this Japanese sterling silver dragon box.

From Arthur & Bond located in Yokohama. One of the leading firms offering Meiji silver and arts (See below).

Meiji period Japanese silver was the finest the world has ever known. Much was crafted by former Samurai. Imperial decree had outlawed their warrior culture. Forcing the Samurai to channel centuries old sword making skills into breathtaking presentation and household silver.

The Meiji silver artisans were so highly regarded that Tiffany, Gorham and the leading British firms sent their staff to Japan to \"learn\" (steal) the secrets of the Samurai.

This box in rectangular form.

The well hinged and fit cover adorned with brilliantly raised Japanese dragon amidst streaming fire.

The massive head with furry snout, chin and brow, mouth open wide revealing razor tip fangs.

Set against all over hammered surfaces. The thousands of individually applied soft hammer punch marks shimmers brilliantly in the natural light.

Two more dragon to sides forming a \"continuous\" scene.

Original divided camphor wood interior.

Original silver wafer hallmarked \"Arthur & Bond Sterling Yokohama\".

Dragon box is 9 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 and 4 tall and 37 1/2 standard ounces, less bit for wood liner.

In very fine condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. Stands even on table or display. The brilliant raised dragons in fire retain their original crisp, vibrant detail. Few small bumps and dints.

We have over 8700 feed backs. And, are quite proud of our Top Seller designation.

We received favorable notice in the March 12th, 2006 New York Times. Page 8, Business Section, in a well written article on silver collecting. Copy furnished upon request.

From our personal collection, a fine mid 19th century coin silver basket by Edward & John Moore is illustrated in the cover article in May/June 2008 Silver Magazine.

Enjoy....and good fortune in your offerding.
