Princess Eugenie of France introduced the small tilted hat in the 1850\'s. It was worn to casual and sport events, and was considered \"racy\" and scandalous by matrons. I guess it allowed too much face to be seen! Small charming versions of this hat were casual wear during the Civil War, when small hats balanced huge skirts. Fast forward to the 1930\'s, and you can picture Ginger Rogers as a hard-working woman wearing the same hat. \"Piquant little hats with a whimsical air helped keep Depression spirits up.\" (Vintage Hats & Bonnets, Langley) The resurgence in Eugenie style hats was attributed to Greta Garbo wearing the style in a movie in 1930. Add a little bunch of violets to the brim for an Eliza Doolittle character. I haven\'t been able to figure out the exact age of the hat, but it appears to have aged well.This saucy little hat is structured from scalloped straw, still in flexible, wearable condition. Kept in As-Found condition, it has a tiny band of brown netting, and two pins with brown felt triangle heads holding the netting in place in front. If pinned close together, the two triangles appear to be a small bow. It has a 1\" grosgrain ribbon head strap (does not go under your chin). Its simplicity is its appeal. Looks lovely with a rhinestone brooch added as an ornament, or add a ribbon hatband to match your Victorian outfit. For the 1930\'s, leave as-is. Measurements: 9.5\" overall diameter, about 2\" from base to crown height. Size written inside is 22.5\".
