Up for sale is a really coolacrylic on canvas painting titled “Clowns” by Mid-Century Modern Jewish artist Benish done in 1972. This isobviously on the fringes of Mid-Century Modern, but this should be obvious fromthe style of the painting. I was thinking that this may have been done by knownIsraeli artist Bennish Mininberg but I haven’t been able to verify that this isthe case. When I first read the title on the back of the painting “Clowns” (plural) Iinitially had a little bit of a difficult time seeing more than one clown. The one in front wasextremely obvious. The one in the back took a little longer to see clearly. Now that I’veowned the painting for some time I can’t but easily see both clowns every timeI look at the painting. Ihave marked up one attached image whichoutlines both clowns. The whiteoutline in this marked up image is obviously not part of the painting itself.

The piece is fairly large at 31” X 31” and is currently in a simple wooden white framewith the painting being ingreat shape for being almost 50 years old. The paint has a heavy impastoalong the edges separating the different almost cubist-like areas of thepainting. The colors at least to me look to be as bright as when the paintingwas first created. It could though really benefit from being both matted andreframed to truly show off this neat artwork and make the colors “pop” evenmore.
