I had seen this for quite some time and was particularly interested in the frame, but now that I\'ve gotten this into my home I have learned quite a bit more about the artist and subject, but nothing about the print/lithograph/silkscreen itself. I am also not certain of the pre-1938 date, but I do know Willy Von Beckerath died on May 10, 1938 and the rice paper description found on the reverse of the frame lists a born reference, but only the customary - (dash) indicating the person was still alive at the time of the writing.

The type of board this image is on is something new and unusual as well for me... The best I can tell, this image is applied directly to some form of pressed fiber board which is fully 1/4\" thick, from the best I can tell, this is not a paper print applied to a backing board...

When I first saw this in the original frame, I thought the cardboard used as the backing board to the frame had caused an acid burn to the image. But, if the image is suffering from any form of acid burn, then it\'s inherent to the material. Fortunately, the coloring is even throughout the print, and not splotchy as most acid burn artwork I\'ve seen. I think this has just yellowed from age.

Looking along the very outer edge, you can see the board was at one time a lighter shade, possibly a deeper cream. I looked all over the net trying to find an example of this piece, and while I found several places selling reproductions on paper, I found no articles describing anything like this or who might have produced the image.

Framing this was a new experience for me, but I feel it came out wonderfully. Since this board print isfully 1/4\" thick, I had to place this inside a frame of it\'s own within the matting. Essentially, this is a frame within a frame. The rough outer dimensions of the frame are 30 1/2\" T x 26 1/2 W, withthe inner mat/frame area measuring a full 3\", and the actual image area 20 1/4\" T x 16 1/2\"W. The frame is in excellent condition, has a dark (almost cherry) finish with an ornate border around the outer and inner frame.

Originally, there were a couple readily visible color break scratches to the surface. I was unhappy with the brighter white which showed up in the color breaks, and while not a great match, I chose to darken the color breaks so they don\'t stand out so dramatically when displayed.

I also applied a bit of stain to the rough edges of the frame itself and will try to catch this later correction in a photograph now that the art is safely behind glass.

I also saved the original description and name plate by placing them inside a plastic pouch on the reverse. The original name plate which read \"Johannes Brahms at the Piano\", was behind some form of tape and nearly entirely faded. So, I used a very similar script style font, and created a new label which reads \"Johannes Brahms - At the Piano - Willy von Beckerath\"...

Over several hours attempting to locate information about the print itself, I came up empty. However, I did find this quote during my research at (thefreelibrary.com), which I found interesting and wanted to include here:

\"To this day, our image of Brahms is generally confined to headshots of him, with magnificent beard and mustache, hair swept back from his forehead, and eyes looking into the distance. Candid depictions, such as Willy Von Beckerath\'s crayon drawings of Brahms at the piano, are rarities.\"

Any questions or information are welcome,
