Printed at 115 Strand, London this amazing and scarce 1840s folio of lithographed maps with original hand water colouring outlines of countries and/or states. Stunning detailed printing with decorative borders with period floral motifs and regional themes such as Native Americans hunting with a bow and arrow, buffalo and the Niagara Falls..So fascinating to see how the countries of the world have changed. Incredible to see a much reduced United States with dear old Texas sitting there as a separate country.These World Atlas\' have usually been cut up and the maps sold separately. Ultra rare with all the maps complete and original marbled binding. The cover retains the green paper label reading \"The London Modern Atlas. Price Twelve Shillings & Sixpence. This item is in good condition for a true antique, showing evidence of use, handling and wear. Condition:- Varies from map to map, some are very good condition while others are split and there has been some good archival repairs done in the past, the restoration work has bedded down nicely. Evidence of some foxing and some oxidation from the hand coloured outlines transferring from one folded page to the surface of the other, this occurs predominantly with green watercolour .
