Washington, February 5, 1868.
Sir: The Secretary of the Treasury has transmitted to this department a letter from the collector of customs at New Orleans, enclosing a communication from an officer ot the revenue service, stating that a number of persons have been trespassing upon the Live Oak Reservation at Biloxi, Mississippi, and that live-oak wood from the government reserve has been supplying the Biloxi market fro fuel. The damage already is stated to be fro $10,000 to $20,000.
In my annual report for December, 1866, the condition of the timber reservation was alluded t as follows:
\"Many years years since the government adopted the policy of reserving from sale certain timber lands for \'the sole purpose of supplying timber for the navy of the Untied States.\' The lands thus reserved were placed under the control of this departments and are scattered through the States of Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Agegents wer appointed, with salaries ranging from five hundred dollars to two thousand dollars per annum ......\"THIS ORIGINAL RESPONSE FROM THE PRESIDENT, IS TWO PAGES IN LENGTH.
THE REPLY FROM THE NAVY DEPARTMENT WAS MADE MADE BY SECRETARY OF THE NAVY, GIDEON WELLES. CONDTION
