Hopi Kachina Bolo Tie

This is a stunning bolo tie measuring 3 7/8” high x 2 3/8” wide. The aglets are 2 7/16” high. The braided cord is 18\" long from the back of the neck to the tip of the aglets.This piece was purchased at the Fred Harvey shop at the Furnace Creek Inn, Death Valley, in 1987. I cannot, with any certainty, identify the maker\'s mark. This fabulous bolo shows a lot of similarities to Helen Long designs. Perhaps the maker influenced her work. Also my research shows a fair amount of contradictory information regarding noted Navajo artists Ike Wilson and Austin Wilson, their names and maker’s marks. I believe the maker’s mark stamped on the back may be an early version of Ike Wilson\'s mark and that the piece was crafted pre 1942, his date of death. His later pieces have a similar mark, an arrow with a “W” shaped bow, but it is more modern. I have seen this mark only two other times with one of them claiming Ike Wilson as the maker. So the maker\'s mark is still a mystery. I cannot provide any certain provenance but I do know this is an extraordinary quality piece! The attachment on the back for the braided cord functions nicely and predates the more modern \"Bennett\" clip attachments. This rare bolo is in amazing condition with lovely turquoise stones, skillfully set and the silver has a beautiful patina. The hand braided black leather cord has a nice softness and the silver tips or aglets are also set with gorgeous organic shaped natural turquoise stones. It is a fabulous quality piece, beautifully made with exceptional craftsmanship, of Native American wearable art, for the serious collector.
