The German Paratroopers, serving mainly as ground troops, were sent into North Afrika with the intent to support and assist Afrika Korps troops in battles near El Alamein, Tobruk and Tunisia. If their most famous battle was the capture of Crete in 1941, then certainly Monte Cassino was their most famous defense. Though they had never actually occupied the monastery until after it was destroyed by Allied bombers, the Fallschirmjägers faced a massive bombardment, heavy air raids, and direct infantry assaults... yet stubbornly refused to leave the now destroyed monastery.

HISTORICAL QUOTE:\"In war there is no second prize for the runner-up.\"General Omar N. Bradley
HISTORICAL NOTE:The German Fallschirmjägers “the Green Devils” (Paratroopers) were an elite fighting force of the Luftwaffe. In the early stages of WWII, the Fallschirmjägers were used as paratroopers. The skillful airborne seizure of Fort Eben-Emaelpermitted the early capture of Belgiumand, alongside successful operations in the Netherlands, was crucial for the speed of the German victories in 1940.However, after the heavy losses suffered in the German invasion of Crete, Hitler felt that large scale airborne operations were too costly and he decided that in all further combat operations theFallschirmjägerswere to be used primarily as ground attack troops. The 6th Fallschirmjäger troops, fighting in the Battle of Normandy in June 1944, put up fierce resistance in the area around Caen and Carentan, France… often in combat against the U.S. Army paratroopers of the 101stand 82ndAirborne Divisions... whom the Fallschirmjägers referred to as \"the Devils in Baggy Pants\".
Although the standard service weapon for the German paratroopers was the Mauser K98k, theFallschirmjägers were often armed with the MP40 in combat due to its relatively light weight and considerable fire power. The MP40, likesome other submachine guns developed during World War II, was an open-bolt, blowback-operated automatic weapon that fired the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge from a 32 round detachable stick magazine. The only mode of fire was fully automatic, however due to the relatively low rate of fire, single shots could be achieved with controlled trigger pulls. The forward folding metal stock on the MP40, which resulted in a shorter overall weapon when folded, also made the weapon desirable among the Fallschirmjägers.Due to the somewhat limited range of the 9mm cartridge, and the reduced accuracy of the MP40 the weapon was extremely useful for clearing out enemy buildingpositions or in close combat, but did not function well in combat at ranges exceeding 100 meters.

Though we have never visited the Greek island of Crete, we have visited the Normandy and Bastogne areas, including all Five of the Normandy Beaches, the Baugnez \'44 Museum - site of the Malmedy Massacre, and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium on several occasions. We have found both the French and Belgian people, especially in the towns in and around Normandy and also in Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life to the French and Belgian civilians and in damaged buildings. In addition, should you ever want to visit the area in and around Normandy or Bastogne,we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which mayhelp to make your travel through the area easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
