Khmer Sandstone Standing Figure of a Female Devata, Angkor Period \'Baphoun\' Style. 12th C.

Description: A superb 12th century hand-carved Khmer Sandstone Female Devata Figure, probably that of Uma, stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional Baphuon style, from Khmer mythology. The figure is in its original condition as acquired from a Fifteen (15) year Private Collection. She measures approximately 24.0 inches (61.0cm) in height, without the removable stand.

The female deity is masterfully modelled from a solid block of stone, depicted standing in samabhanga with both arms and legs broken, gracefully poised with a voluptuous profile, broad hips and well-defined naked upper body, wearing a long sampot worn low about the midriff, with the navel visible, secured by a decorative belt of trapped ornamentation and complimented by an ornate central panel elegantly draped in stylized folds and pleats, fashioned in a fishtail flare near the garments hem.

XXX Her youthful face with indigenous characteristics has a serene downcast expression, almond-shaped eyes, connected eyebrows above a well-shaped broad nose, smiling lips, and long pendulous earlobes. The head is covered in tightly braided hair woven in vertiical rows, rising to a dome-shaped topknot (Chignon) secured by a jeweled band.XXX Originally chiseled as a full figured image, the fragmented portion is an exquisite example, unaltered, without repairs. She has a well weathered and worn surface with a naturally aged patina of molted variation of reddish-brown hues and colour throughout, showing minor degradation, and clear evidence of selective erosion, that developes after extensive exposure to the elements over time.

NOTE: SOLD AS PRESENTED WITH REMOVABLE STAND. REMARKS: ACQUIRED FROM A FIFTEEN(15) YEAR PRIVATE COLLECTION.

Data Observation: Excellent Condition, with the exception of small surface abrasions. Severed arms and limbs are typically found in images of this type, having multiple breaks from the burial Environment in which they were unearthed, which does not detract from the beauty of the piece in anyway, as displayed. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.

Estimate Value: We are offering this item to our audience at a considerable lower wholesale value.
