A plethora of fabrics in this OUTSTANDING Maple Leaf antique quilt measuring 70\" x 86\"; please note all \"leaves\" are in plaids, most of them Alamance Plaids and background blocks are in tiny floral calicos ~~ and juxtapositioned against the Alamance Plaid leaves, it\'s quite breath-taking. Very energetic and vibrant, although the darker colors didn\'t show up well with my digital. Work is done using old treadle machine which would have been a more complicated task than stitching it by hand, given the monstersewing machines of the time. Backing is a blue fabric (see last pic). Alamance plaids were made by Hope Mills, situated on the Haw River in Alamance County, N.C., near Burlington, and founded by the Jordan family, beginning production about 1850 and closing their doors about 1910. Their salesmen traveled as far west as Iowa and Illinois; and I\'ve found many a quilt in Iowa containing the plaids. At one time I had a collection of them but then there were moves, and getting rid of things, and you know how that goes. Excellent + condition, has never been washed and doesn\'t need it; but there are a couple of very small spots (you have to look for them), and a good soaking would probably be in order.
