ANTARCTIC EXPD circular cancels dated MR 4 09, the closing date of the first Antarctic post office. Endorsed and signed \'Some of the first Polar stamps issued, EH Shackleton, Postmaster\'. Further inscribed on the reverse \'To the Hon JA Calder from Ernest Shackleton, Ottawa 1921\'. Very scarce. Magnificent and generally fine. SGA1
Note: prior to leaving New Zealand on the 1908 British Antarctic Expedition, Ernest Shackleton was appointed as a New Zealand Postmaster and provided with 23,492 overprinted 1d Zealandia stamps and a circular date stamp. Due to adverse weather conditions, Shackleton was unable to reach King Edward VII Land and established his base in McMurdo Sound
