Big Egg Shape – Beautiful Birdseye
circa 1960’s-70’s, Fantail Bit
Here is an early Kriswill CHIEF, made in the 1960’s-70’s in Denmark. A great looking pipe with uniquely styled egg shape bowl with slight bottom ridge. This one is really beautiful showing good color and interesting birdseye and cross-grain. The Kriswill company made some nice pipes, and have their own signature look (see photo of shapes). Overall the bowl has a nice Tobacco capacity, tall and feels good in the hand. The stem is a saddle design with slight fantail out to the bit, no tooth marks and in great overall shape. I’ve included a Kriswill ad to show you the variety of shapes on it, this 71 shape is not shown and I find it a very desirable. It’s freshly polished, draws very easy and is ready to smoke!

Kriswill was one of the large pipe manufacturers in Denmark during the 1960s and 1970s, and I believe closed around 20 years ago. Their catalog cover read “By Appointment to the Royal Danish Court, KRISWILL, Kriswork Briar Trading, Briar Pipes Hand Made in Denmark.”
During the 1960s, a period which represented the zenith of the Kriswill ascension, they were marketed and sold totally independently of Stanwell and, AFAIK, and were never a subsidiary. After the Danish Kriswill enterprise ended, pipes were made in Norway and in France under the Kriswill label.
