First edition, second state, foolscap quarto (sheets 8 3/8” x 6 ½”),pp. (1-2) lacking, (3-11), 12-259, (260) blank, (261) “Chapter XXIV”, (262)blank, colophon in 13 lines on the rear paste-down liner, color pictorial title& 22 (of 23) color plates (lacking the plate opposite p. 80) andillustrations throughout after W.W. Denslow. Second state (Blanck state z)where p. 14 line 1 reads “low wail of”; p. 81 fourth line from bottom reads “pieces”;p. [227] reads “While the Woodman”; the colophon is in 13 lines; & withimperfect type in the last lines of pp. 100 & 186. The present copy alsohas the later state printed copyright notice on the verso of the title (\"Copyright1899 / By L. Frank Baum and W. W. Denslow. / All Rights Reserved\") and thelater state of the plate opposite p. 34 (without two blotches on the moon) andthe later state of the plate opposite p. 92 (without the red at the horizonline.


Original pale green pictorial cloth stamped ingreen and red, binding state c (Blanckstate z) with the publisher’s imprint at the foot of the spine in redserifed type with the “o” in “Co” within the “C”.

Good copy re-cased with theoriginal back-strip laid-down. Cover lettering & image are still good butfour letters of the back-strip title are faded & there is moderate wear& soil. The text sheets are very good & clean. The inserted plateopposite p. 34 has tears affecting the image but without loss, the plateopposite p. 44 has a short margin tear & slight edge fray, the plateopposite p. 80 is missing, the first sheet (blank on the recto & with the publisher’s ad on the verso) ismissing. Binder’s blank free end-sheets havebeen supplied from older sheets. There were no free end sheets (only paste-downs) originally.There are no names, colorings ormarkings.
