L181 PORZELLANFABRIK F WESSEL GERMAN HAND PAINTED APPLIED LACE DANCING FIGURINES
We are pleased to offer this lovely 1950s Friedrich Wilhelm Wessel Dresden style lacy dancing figurines, with fine German hand finishing, including well articulated hands, facial features, and spectacular applied lace (their specialty) & roses. This pair is beautiful German finish work at a bargain price. There is very little known about this manufacturer in Frankenthal, Germany, most probably because the business only existed for a very a short time. Friedrich Wilhelm Wessel founded the factory in 1949 and mainly produced lace figurines and porcelain household utility pieces. Nearly right from the start he got into constant trouble for the misuse of the Dresden designation (e.g. Dresden Art, Dresdner Art, etc.) which he was not allowed to use, as his items were neither decorated in Dresden, in any Dreden decoration style like Dresden florals, nor were they decorated by workers that had learned the trade in a Dresden decoration studio. In addition Wessel also used a slightly modified but nonetheless unauthorized copy of an older Frankenthal mark which further increased his problems. All of the problems mounted, until 1964, when the factory closed forever. The only sure thing is that he was not related with the well known Wessel family from Bonn (Northrhine-Westphalia). However, problems notwithstanding, the Friedrich Wessel porcelain is very well made, the applied lace work is outstanding, and the hand painting is excellent.
