LARGE ANTIQUE CHINESE IRON BLADEITEM DESCRIPTIONA fairly unusual object. Most encountered examples are carved from jade and pierced with three apertures. The jade blades, of course, being only ceremonial and seen in tomb burial. This blade however, might have actually been a used example. It appears fairly old, and was obviously very sharp. This piece comes from the same estate as a few of the last pieces we sold, and was once part of a traveling exhibition on life in early China that was sold at Butterfields in the mid-1980s. And old sticker is present from the sale on the blade.
The blade measures approximately 24.25 inches by 5.25 inches.
The blade is in good used condition with expected wear including corrosion, and minor dings. There is an area of encrustation along the blade edge. Age is uncertain but it could be very old, either way, it is the first iron example I have seen and will probably be the last - an interesting study piece.
