American Colonial / Revolutionary War Era

1750 to 1800

A Rare Antique Pennsylvania Forged Iron

Primitive Hearth Cooking Tool

DESCRIPTION

The Largest and Earliest Gridiron Whirling Hearth Broiler that we have ever seen!

From a local collection in Lancaster County, Pa.

It is Blacksmith made hand-wrought iron work and a real beauty.

A full 15-3/4\"across the rotating grid and 27\"in overall length.

You can still find many antique blacksmith made gridirons ... but most that you come across are from the mid to late 1800\'s. The basic form did not change very much, and the need for these cooking utensils remained in rural America well into the late 19th century since many folks still used the hearth for cooking.

However, true early Rotating Broilers are rare to find. A close inspection of Colonial Era Broilers will show the evidence of considerable years of use at the hearth, and early construction methods not seen on later gridiron broilers.

If you\'re a collector or a dealer that prefers the very early iron utensils then here\'s a real beauty for you.

Here\'s one of the best American Colonial Era Gridirons that we have ever come across in our 40 + years of selling ... and it is the largest that we have ever seen.

A superior and handsome handwrought iron hearth cooking tool made well more than 200 years ago.

An offset long handle that afforded good balance with wide ring holder for hanging and a flatened thumbrest for lifting and carrying. The handle and the front legs were fashioned from one piece of iron, hammered and bent into the curving shape of the front legs. The back leg supportis peened into the handle at the top.

The grid is huge, a full 15-1/2\" across and has 9 bars. Interestingly, one of the bars has several evenly spaced holes, the Colonial Era blacksmith making use of what iron was on hand at the time. The grid pivots upon a rivet hammered through the center of the frame , and has a small wafer of iron between the two to allow the grid to rotate freely abovethe leg supports. The broiler stands evenly, the grid rotates properly, it is sturdy and strong with no looseness.

We show this Antique Colonial Era Rotating Broiler with three good sized pots on it so you can see just how very large it is. The pots are not part of this sale.

An amazing and beautiful antique 1700\'s hearth cooking utensil, one that you will delight in owning.
