LETTER BY THE HON. THOMAS EWING TO HIS EXCELLENCY BENJAMIN STANTONLIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF OHIOAN ANSWER TO HIS CHARGES AGAINST OUR GENERALS WHO FOUGHT THE BATTLE OF SHILOH, ON THE 6th OF APRIL, 1862FIRST EDITIONNEAR FINE CONDITIONProtected in a clear, acid-free, archival sleeve with paperboard backing and an archival wrap.Original, Antique Wrap/BookletOfficial Commemorative ProgramPUBLISHED BY RICHARD NEVINS, PRINTER, COLUMBUS, IN 1862DORNBUSCH III, 2941This original, 155-year old, first edition, antique, wrap/booklet presents a letter from the HON. Thomas Ewing to Lieutenant Governor Benjamin Stanton of Ohio answering the charges against various Civil War Union general officers that fought at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862. This interesting piece in which this Kansas Colonel (1829-96) – who had just resigned as the states’ first Supreme Court Chief Justice to support the Union Cause – defends General William T. Sherman and other Union generals whose performance was criticized by Stanton in print. Ewing attacks Stanton’s criticism point-by-point, though he does fail to mention that Sherman also happened to be his brother-in-law. Ewing was close to Sherman throughout their lives. This first edition, antique booklet is in excellent overall condition. The exterior wrap has some smudging to it, but is in nice condition otherwise. There is a prior-owner signature at the top of the exterior, front cover as shown. (I have not evaluated this signature to determine if it was to a Civil war solider or notable.) The interior is in excellent overall condition with no writing, but the interior has some foxing. The wrap/booklet is protected in a clear, acid-free, archival sleeve with paperboard backing. 24 pages. The binding is tight throughout the book and the cover is tight as well. Overall a nice, tight, original, first edition antique booklet. a.imagelink {color:#0000FF;} a:hover.imagelink {color:#0000FF;} a:visited.imagelink {color:#800080;} a.imagelink img.saleimage { border: 2px solid #0000FF; } a:visited.imagelink img.saleimage { border: 2px solid #800080; } LETTER BY THE HON.
