James Joseph Kingstone was born on 26 Aug 1892. He was a graduate of the RMA Sandhurst and appointed second lieutenant in the 2nd Dragoon Guards (The Queen\'s Bays) on 4 Sep 1912. During the First World War he received the Military Cross on 14 Jan 1916 and later, as a captain, the DSO on 3 June 1919. He was promoted to major in 1929, Lieutenant-Colonel in 1932 commanding the 9th Lancers. He left this command when he was promoted to Colonel on 4 Mar 1936.

During World War II he fought in the Middle East and Europe. Brigadier Kingstone was under the command of Major General J. G. W. Clark and was part of his relieving Habforce which included the 4th Cavalry Brigade, a battalion of The Essex Regiment, the Arab Legion Mechanised Regiment, a field artillery battery and a troop of anti-tank guns. Kingstone commanded a flying column named Kingcol in his honour. Habforce and Kingcol, parts of Iraqforce, set off from the British Mandate of Palestine to relieve the forces defending RAF Habbaniya. Kingstone was again under Clark\'s command during the Syria-Lebanon Campaign. In 1944 he was appointed ADC to the King, awarded the CBE in the following year when he retired and was appointed Colonel of the Queen\'s Bays. He died on 20th September 1966

This is onelarge photograph from what we believeis a unique and outstandingcollection of some 350 + portrait photographs, mainly from the 1920\'s -1930\'s,thought to beof great historical importance. They are all being listed by us on over the next few weeks. The photographswere discovered, stored in their original wooden Lafayette studio wooden crates, and are believed to be the actual studio copies held by The Lafayette studios as a record of their work. The fact that they havebeen carefully stored for many years, and not displayed, has resulted in the photographs being presented today in outstanding condition. We have other material relating to Lafayette also, all from the original studio, all will be offered for sale shortly.

Very little decent material from the Lafayette studio is available for sale in the market, simply because much of the studio archive is held by the V&A Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery, in London, together with various other institutions around the world.Ours is believed to be the largest section of the Lafayette archive material to exist in private hands. Two photographs very similar to the ones we are offering were sold at sale last year by Webbs of Wilton, one for £1500, the other for £500 (bothplus 24% premium), depicting the Crown Prince of Arabia, one being hand coloured, a practice that Lafayette carried out using professional artists, with astonishing accuracy and attention to detail.

Shipped worldwide using a rigid 6 ply system to prevent creasing.
