Large Ancient Greek Red Figure Apulian Patera - 320 BC:
$21500.00

An ancient Greek Apulian red-figure patera, dating to around 320 BC.

A particularly large example of the type, of classic form; the shallow dish set on a ring base, with knobbed handles set bilaterally.

The tondo decorated with a young woman, walking before an altar, her hair is pulled in back into a bun. She holds a phiale (offering bowl) in her outstretched left hand and a wreath in the left. With rosettes in the field, a frieze of waves below and the scene encircled by a frieze of laurel leaves.

The outside is decorated with two scenes on each side; in the first a young naked man is shown sitting on a garment, in his left hand he holds a phiale, an oinochoe in his right, he turns his head toward a young woman who reaches out with a wreath. To his right side stands a naked young man, his cloak thrown over his arms, holding a torch in his outstretched hand. The opposing side features another naked young man with a coat on his left arm, his right hand is outstretched holding a wreath, in front of him is a young woman dressed in a long chiton, wearing a chignon and headband.

The patera is one of the largest, most impressive and distinctive vessel shapes of the Greek colonies of southern Italy. Produced in both bronze and terracotta, it was generally used generally to pour libations. This is a particularly nice example with a rarely found, strong pedigree.
