Description: This sale is for a stunning and large19th century Turkish / Ottoman wall hanging or panel embroidered onfine linen. It is embroidered beautifully with Sarma embroidery in an array ofvibrant colors: blue, green, pink, purple, white, gold, brown and beige threads- and probably more colors I haven\'t found. Each and every element is alsoedged in black - another sign pointing to Sarma. The brown and goldbackground embroidery all appears to be metallic thread. The panel is edged in darkmetallic copper crocheted trim, hand attached; perhaps related to the Oyadesigns produced in the Ottoman palaces. These types of panels were used especiallyin the Imperial court and its circle which produced embroidery of such highquality that it has all the characteristics of fine art. The most strikingexamples of Turkish embroidery are those that were used in the furnishings ofthe palaces - divan and cushion covers, floor coverings, wall and doorcurtains, and covers for the throne. I believe that this is such an embroideredwork, with the Tughra apparently embroidered in the middle diamond, with fourmoon and stars in each corner of the piece. There is a copious amount ofwriting all around the circumference of the wide border. The panel also has asmall amount of floral motifs, but this panel was obviously a piece thatextolled the virtues of the Sultan or another high official. There is nobacking to this piece, and you can see how every thread has beenhand-embroidered. This panel is just a beauty, and would be a stunning additionto any décor with a Middle Eastern theme. This is truly exceptional!

ConditionReport: Very Good toExcellent antique condition. The hand applied copper edge decoration has becomeloose from the panel at one area near the corner. This will be easilyre-whipped to the piece with matching thread. There are areas of embroideryloss that have actually worn off this piece in places, leaving a linen \'shadow\'behind. I believe this is because this piece is quite old - dating to at leastthe mid- to late-1800\'s. An experienced embroiderer could re-work thisembroidery, but I believe it would take away from the inherent mastery of theoriginal Sarma embroiderer.

By placing a winning offer, you have agreed to purchase the itemoffered. As of March 15, 2015, we will gladly accept the return of any item … only if the item has been grosslymisrepresented in the pictures and the description. Canceling an sale. Very rarely we may have to cancel ansale which has an error … even if the sale has ended. In allcases, the item will be re-listed at the same beginning price. Any refund duewill immediately be credited to your PayPal account.
