Item Description:

This is a wonderful, extra large, old Santo Domingo Thunderbird necklace. It dates to the 1930s through 40s. This necklace is in all original condition and is strung on the original cotton string. The turquoise has turned green with age. The stone beads are gypsum. The thunderbird has gypsum inlay as well as turquoise chips and what looks to possibly be old red phonograph record pieces. There are some thicker, wavy areas on the tail feathers and the bottom of the wings, but these all look to be original with the piece and add a little character. It is rare to find Thunderbird necklaces of this size and still in all original condition.

The necklace measures approximately 31 inches around. The Thunderbird measures 2 7/8 inches high and 2 5/8 inches across. The inlaid triangular pieces measure from 1 3/4\" long to 3/4\" long. Santo Domingo Thunderbird necklaces where first made during the depression and ensuing years when the Santo Domingo Indians had few supplies to work with. They often used old phonograph records, car battery casings, turquoise chips and sometimes even red plastic spoons from restaurants. These necklaces were often sold by the roadside to tourists.
