RARE AUTHENTIC OLD PHILIPPINE HINGYON IFUGAO CARVED WOOD STANDING FEMALE BULUL

This is a large, rare, authentic ritual Namulditan, Hingyon, Ifugao, Northern Philippines carved wood female Bulul. This statue is traditionally used in rituals, ceremonies and sacrifice for many, many years as attested by its patina. Bulul is not an ordinary object for the sculpture among the Ifugao people. It is something that plays a very significant role in Ifugao rice agriculture especially during harvest. A Bulul statue is highly given the respect and praise based on a belief that spirits reside on it.

We can compare this statue from a Bulul statue from Hingyon sold at Christie\'s Paris on June 19, 2014 for $34,082.00USD. The statue has many similarities such an ovoid head, protruding ears, eyebrows and body modeled with harmony and hands and feet with fine fingers and toes.

Antique genuine Bulul statues are disappearing in the Philippines. They are now found in museums and private collections. Carved from one piece of narra wood, the statue depicts a strong female showing broad shoulders and muscular physique. It takes true craftsmanship to carve and create such statue and many old artisans/craftsmen have died taking their skills with them.

The hard narra wood is covered with black crusted patina which is a good sign of ageand sacrificial use.Overall it shows exposure to elements such as heat, smoke, etc. Natural cracks are present due to age. The age and patina of the wood and craftsmanship make this Bulul an authentic & rare and sought after artifact.
