Offering for your consideration an antique American Folk Art tinsel painting dating from the 19th century.
This original, hand painted reverse glass painting depicts a copious bouquet of colorful, mixed blossoms arranged in a pedestal base compote. The compote appears to be resting on the top of a pedestal. As a whimsical touch, there is a bird and also a butterfly resting at the top of the bouquet.
The painting is backed with tin foil to reflect the light. This gives it a twinkling appearance when the painting is on display.
Usually tinsel paintings have a black background. This painting has the more unusual white background, which sets off the rich, jewel tone flowers.
I believe that the painting has been,professionally re-framed at some point in time. The current frame appears to compliment the painting. I would guess it was re-framed in the 1950\'s. There is a typed note attached to the back with the provenance. (Please see the last photo.) The current large 20\" by 21.5\" frame is gold gilt with a black outer edge. Someone has ripped the paper back...possibly looking for hidden cash. (The back of pictures was a well known hiding place for valuables, a hidden space to impede thieves.) There is a framers\' s sticker also on the back which reads Herfords Dearborn, Michigan. Obviously the painting has had some interesting travels in its\' history, as I found it in Pennsylvania and it now resides in Connecticut.
The 14.5\" by 16\" painting is in excellent condition. Please see all photos which are a part of the description.
