Large Woven Vintage Southern Splint Oak Buttocks Basket w/ Colored Stripes:

Up for sale is a large sized Southern Appalachian splint buttocks or melon style basket. The basket features a bentwood oak handle, a bentwood oak frame, and tapered oak ribs forming the framework on the base and on the sides. This is obviously the work of an experienced weaver, since the shape is beautifully symmetrical. And be sure to notice the sturdy bentwood oak handle. If you look at the inside, you can see an array of colorful stripes, but these are now most visible on the inside of the basket. The basket is old enough to have developed an awesome aged patina. This beautifully woven old Southern splint oak buttocks basket will make an outstanding addition to someone\'s collection.
The basket, as noted, is a classic large Southern buttocks-style basket. It measures 11\" across from handle to handle, 14\" from end to end, 7\" deep, and 13\" tall to the top of the handle. Because of its age, there are a couple of flaws - there are several missing narrow oak weavers on both ends of the basket, one spot being more obvious than the other. But the ribs of the basket are all intact, as is the rim and the handle. Look carefully at the photos of the ends, and you can see what I\'m talking about. These missing splints will keep this basket from bringing top dollar, but as you can see, the basket still displays very well. See photos, as they give a true picture of its features and condition.
