Laurids Lonborg Denmark MCM Retro Tall Pepper Mill Matching Salt Shaker Now Rare:
$148.00

I\'ve owned this set of MCM blue colored pepper mill and salt shaker for many years and am now prepared to let it go to someone who appreciates retro or Midcentury modern items such as these. The pepper mill measures 8 7/8\" high and the salt shaker measures 3 5/8\" high; the mill has a metal grinder that is engraved \"Laurids Lonborg, Made in Denmark.\" These are both in very good condition; I\'ve never used either one of these as I purchased them only for their exquisite display appearance. I assume that these might have originally been sold together as a matched set but that\'s only a guess. I\'ve inspected both of these and note the following: On the base of the pepper mill wood there appears to be two small \"bumps\" on the outer edge as if this was rubbed against something but these marks are almost invisible when this mill is sitting on a shelf. I also don\'t see any damage \"marks\" on the wood surface so these might be how this was manufactured. There also appears to be several small slight handling marks on the blue surface of the pepper mill which might clean off but I\'d rather not attempt to \"improve\" the appearance by attempting to rub any chemicals on the surface. I wanted to make sure that I describe anything which I might notice if I were purchasing these now.
I was uncertain aboutthe types of woods employed on the mill and the salt shaker; the base of the salt shaker has an original cork which is in immaculate condition. The wood top of the pepper mill pulls off to add peppercorns and there is a metal shaft which extends down to the metal grinder. The top of the shaft has threads and when I pulled off the top, reinstalled and then turned it the top became secure and the metal grinder turns the way that is was designed to operate to grind peppercorns. In attempting to research this set I found one example of a similar but different color Laurids Lonborg pepper mill where the seller described the woods as being a combination of wenge wood and painted beech. I found this description of wenge wood on Wikipedia: \"Millettia laurentii is a legume tree from Africa and native to the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The species is listed as \"endangered\" in the IUCN Red List, principally due to destruction of its habitat and over-exploitation for timber.[1] Wenge, a dark colored wood, is the product of Millettia laurentii. Other names sometimes used for wenge include African rosewood (ambiguous), faux ebony, dikela, mibotu, bokonge, and awong. The wood\'s distinctive color is standardized as a \"wenge\" color in many systems.\"
Please ask any questions you might have and I\'ll be happy to answer them. I\'ve provided as much information about this set as I possess and want to make sure that I completely describe this set which I\'ll be mailing out to you. Thanks for looking at my sale.
