Cornelius Oto Jansen 1585-1638, author of Augustinus to be distinguished from his uncle Cornelius Jansen the Elder, 1510-76, who was Bishop of Ghent from 1564. After two years in the College du Faucon at Louvain, he migrated to Paris in 1604. Here he met Saint-Cyran, with whom he studied for five years and his later correspondence with him reveals a elaborate and concerted action against the Jesuits in 1626-7 at Madrid.
In 1628, after reading the whole of St. Augustine\'s writings several times, he began writing Augustinus which was not published until after his death. He was consecrated Bishop of Ypres in 1636.
The Abbe de Saint-Cyran, Jean Duvergier de Hauranne,1581-1643, was also attracted to the writings of St. Augustine and he made it his object to reform Catholicism on Augustinian lines, largely in the hope of defeating Protestantism with its own weapons. from 1623 he became closelyassociated with Port Royal and the Arnauld family and as spiritualcounselorof theconvent was able to exercise considerable religious influence until arrested by Richelieu. LaterJansenist\'sregarded him as a martyr.
Antoine Arnauld,1612-94, entered the Sorbonne in 1633 and became a prominent figure inintellectual society of Paris. He became a priest in 1641and immediately retired to Port Royal and began to publish books furthering Jansenism - in particularDe la frequente communion,1643. He succeeded Saint-Cyran as the leader and was antagonistic towards the Jesuits. He was censured by the Sorbonne in January 1656 and not restored as a Doctor of the Sorbonne until 1669, following \'The Peace of the Church\' which was a temporary cessation of the conflict in 1688, when Arnauld was treated as a popular hero. The conflict was over Jansen\'s assetion the Catholic dogma and moral theology should be based on the true doctrine of St. Augustine regarding Grace and Salvation. Pope Innocent X condemned five propositions reputedly drawn from Jansen\'s book which was published without the Pope\'s prior approval two years after Jansen\'s death.
