This is the original final drawing by Les Stout for a cartoon featuring Charles Francis“Heinie” Wagner, Bob Quinn (President of the Red Sox), Hi Mason (Club Secretary, Jack McCallister (Red Sox scout) and former manager Bill Carrigan thatwas published in a Boston newspaper in 1930. It was created on the occasion of what was likely an annual dinner for the Boston Red Sox organization; the date of publication was apparently January 20 or 21. The title“At the Sox Dinner”is handwritten in the top margin and printed“By Les Stout” appears there as well.This original is signed“Les Stout\" by the artist at lower left.
Les Stout was a sportswriter and cartoonist who worked for Boston newspapers and the Boston Garden. Heinie Wagner was a major league baseball shortstop from 1902-1918 and played for the Boston Red Sox from 1906 to 1918. He managed that team for the 1930 season and resigned when the team finished last in the American League. Newspaper publication notes are written in the bottom margin. Included is the printed cartoon clipped from the newspaper in which it was published.
The original drawings of Heinie Wagner, Jack McCallister, Bob Quinn and Bill Carrigan were drawn on separate sheets that are mounted to this one; the images of three have darkened with age: FINE condition.
