Up for sale is a rare Louis Mayer bust of a clean-shaven Abraham Lincoln. This bronze captures the image of the \"Great Emancipator\" early in his career.Lincoln\'s name is written in script along the front base. It is signed by the artist along the right side. This bust lacks the 1916 copyright date found on the original edition, and is therefore likely a reproduction from the 1970s or later. The reproductions were sold as exact copies of the originals and were sold to generate funds for Lincoln foundations and societies. These copies originally sold for around $800-$1,200.This is a very attractive piece and is prized by collectors in both the art and political collecting arenas.
This bust looks as if it is hollow cast on a plinth and not a solid bronze bust. It measures approximately 13 1/2\" high, 6 1/2\" wide and 5 1/2\" deep. It weighs in at almost 11 pounds. The bust is in very good condition with some light wear. Over the years, it has developed a gorgeous patina, giving it an iridescent sheen. A beautiful collectible!Louis Mayer (1869-1969) was the prototypical first generation, Wisconsin-born artist. He began his studies with Wisconsin immigrant artists, Richard Lorenz and Otto von Ernst at the Wisconsin Art Institute. Like many others of his generation,he continued his studies in Germany at the Weimar Art School and then went on to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts where he encountered fellow Milwaukeean Carl von Marr. In 1897, he became a student at the Academie Julien in Paris.When he returned to Milwaukee, he began teaching at the Wisconsin School of Art. In 1901 he was instrumental in the formation and the first president of the Society of Milwaukee Artists; in 1913 they became the Wisconsin Painters and sculptors.
